Developing Empathy: How to feel empathy for those less fortunate

Empathy is essential to our ability to build a more equitable and just society. It helps us put ourselves in the shoes of those less fortunate, understand their struggles, and see how our own privilege can be used to help others.

As someone who has seen a lot in my lifetime, I like to think that I am more empathetic than most. I understand those who have been through pain, hardship, and war. However, I also understand that it’s not easy for some people to empathize with those less fortunate.

By developing empathy for those who are disadvantaged and marginalized in our communities, we can create opportunities for collaboration and support that will lead to positive outcomes for everyone involved.

Start with ourselves

Developing empathy begins with understanding our own privilege - what resources are readily available to us? How do these resources give us an advantage over others? By understanding our privilege, we not only have a deeper appreciation for what we have, but we can also begin to understand the hardships that others go through without it.

Give back to your community

With this awareness in hand, it's time to start giving back. Opportunities abound for individuals and organizations: volunteering at local non-profit shelters or contributing time or monetary donations towards causes of your choosing. In addition, utilizing your influence and privilege to advocate for those less fortunate is another powerful way to make a difference.

Just listen

Another important step in learning to empathize with those less fortunate is to listen simply. Often, people will suffer in silence and be judged without being asked their story. Maybe they are suffering from injustice. Perhaps they got sick and can’t afford to pay the bills. You will never know their story…unless you ask.

So, take a moment out of your day or week and listen to someone else’s story.

A Single Act of Kindness

Empathy is often seen as an intangible or nebulous concept, but it's crucial that we start somewhere. A single act of empathy can have ripple effects throughout our communities. It can inspire others to take action and give back in their own ways. It can even create more empathy overall—a critical component of building a better future for all of us.

So don't underestimate the power of showing empathy towards those less fortunate: not only will you be making a positive impact on the world around you, but you'll also be improving yourself as well. Do good, give back, and show empathy—you'll be surprised at the results.

It all starts with empathy, and we can create a brighter tomorrow together. So what are you waiting for? Let's come together and make a difference in the world! Your empathy has the power to change lives, so let's use it to create an equitable and just society. Together, we can do anything! And remember: empathy is the key that unlocks our potential to do good in this world. Let's open that door and bring about positive transformation for everyone.
