The Leadership Lesson Hidden in Ted Lasso's Panic Attacks

Some of the most important leadership challenges aren't visible.
Not to our teams.
Not to our families.
Sometimes...not even to us.
With the new season of Ted Lasso approaching, I went back and watched one of the most powerful storylines in the series. I don't think it's really about panic attacks.
I think it's about awareness.
One of the reasons Ted's panic attacks resonate so deeply is that he isn't simply hiding them.
He's trying to understand them.
He knows something is happening.
He just doesn't know what.
That's a place many leaders know well.
They continue performing.
Leading.
Supporting everyone around them.
While quietly carrying something they haven't yet been able to name.
The operating systems that help us survive one season of life can become invisible because they've worked for so long.
Optimism. Humor. Achievement. Control. Independence. None of those are bad.
Until they become the only way we know how to respond.
That's why awareness comes first.
Before we change our behavior...before we fix the problem... before we make another decision... we have to understand what's actually happening.
Because you can't update an operating system you don't know you're running.
