Developing Healthy Goals

We’re couple months into 2023, when many of us, myself included, begin to lose our excitement for resolutions and new habits. We’re finding it harder to go to the gym or we’re tempted to eat that drive-thru cheeseburger? If this is a common occurrence year after year, you may miss the keys to developing your goals.

There are four keys to helping you meet your goals: reflection, mindfulness, connection, and empathy. These aren’t your usual tools to meet your goals, right? Let’s look at why these are vital to meeting your healthy goals.

Reflection

If you haven’t already, you need to reflect on your goals, how you want to achieve them, and how you have achieved them in the past. Developing goals requires time to reflect on your successes and ensure they are achievable.

What worked last time you tried to achieve your goals? What didn’t work?

You may have been working toward certain long-term goals over the past few years, and now you’re looking at 2023 as an opportunity to continue growing or changing direction.

Mindfulness

Whether career-based, physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial — setting healthy New Year goals can help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year. To ensure your goals are achievable, be mindful of how much time, energy, and resources you need to get there. If you want to start a morning routine that takes three hours, but you only have about an hour to get ready in the morning, be mindful of what’s most important.

Also, be mindful of the feelings you have around your goals if they feel like a chore or a punishment, then you’ll never reach your goal because you won’t want to. Why would you want something like that in your everyday life?

Connection

It can also be helpful to talk about your New Year goals with family and friends, as they can be a great source of emotional and mental support when things get tough. This connection gives you people who can help keep you accountable and someone to lean on if things get difficult for you. And don’t forget to celebrate your successes — even the small ones!

Empathy

The most important thing to remember when developing healthy goals is to have empathy for yourself. Too often, we’re hard on ourselves if we miss a day or two or cheat on our diet. We hate ourselves for it. Remember to have compassion and empathy for yourself. You’re trying something new. You’re bound to stumble sometimes, and that’s okay. Don’t let it put you down. Get back up and try again.

Setting healthy goals is about taking care of yourself and giving yourself the tools to thrive in 2023. That’s why you must have the right tools to help you not only achieve those goals, but also protect you from overstressing about them.
